Intensive training training sessions were conducted over two days on election observation from a gender perspective. Women emanating from varying regions around Libya were selected to participate in the training and were joined by six experienced international observers. The women were deployed in teams in eight areas of the country.

PREVIOUS GEM MISSIONS

Morocco & Tunisia 2011

A gender analysis of political processes and policies in Morocco and Tunisia showed that a more balanced participation would not simply result from a formal mandate from women. The GEM Mission to these countries in 2011 laid out a specific working plan on how international women's organisations and the international community can further support and sustain female leadership and women's political participation in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

The mission completed various tasks of observation such as visiting polling stations, assessment of electoral materials and a fairness evaluation of the electoral campaign. By training local women in Pakistan as election observers, the GEM Mission contributes to the local community by preparing future gender balanced elections.
